This view looks south. Floatbridge #2 is in the background. It is a wooden Howe truss design. Wooden footbridges actually were well suited to this service as the material’s flexibility allowed it to withstand the constant twisting forces of the railroad cars passing over as the water level varied from wave action. There is a B&O boxcar on a station car float in the upper left background. Station floats had two tracks, and (generally) a covered platform running down the center. They were used for unloading of cargo from railcars while the railcar remained aboard.
